The median hourly wage for skilled nursing in the home health field is $24.80, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average wages of child care and education workers and home-health care workers are $13.51 and $13.81, respectively–roughly half of the median hourly wages across the economy. We then returned to a measure of hourly wage, and found that a fairer standard wage, using that reference point, would pay the average worker in early care and education $21.22 per hour.

We find that child care workers deserve, at minimum, hourly wages of $21.11 to $25.95, depending on which benchmark is applied. Extrapolating into the US context using average hourly wages across the labour market, care workers would be paid $21.85 an hour using that benchmark. Building upon existing literature about work-family and pay penalties, we created and introduce a series of benchmarks to guide the setting of wages for home care workers and childcare workers. This fact sheet provides background on applying the minimum wage, overtime, and child labor requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to skilled nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities, and assisted-living facilities.

An employee is entitled to minimum wage and overtime pay of time and one-half for any hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a workweek. Each employer covered by Wisconsins overtime provisions is required to pay to each covered employee 1 1/2 times his or her normal pay rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week. A workweek consisting of 14 consecutive days is accepted instead of seven consecutive days of workweek for purposes of calculating overtime pay, as long as one-half time and a normal regular rate of pay is paid for all hours worked in excess of eight hours a day and 80 hours during a 14-day period. Failure to pay overtime beyond 8 hours worked in one day to workers (both full-time and part-time) covered by the 8 and 80 system.

Higher wages to employees on commission at retail and service establishments when 50% of earnings are earned on commission, while one-half the minimum wage is earned on all hours worked. An employer can choose to pay employees based on salary, commission, piece-rate, or some other basis, but to calculate an employees overtime wages, an employees wage must be converted into a per-hour wage. Whether an employer elects to pay the overtime premium directly into wages or provide compensatory time for an employee, the employer is required to pay that individual 1 and 1/2 times his regular rate of pay for overtime hours. A caregivers compensation–if he works for an agency rather than as an individual carer–is always hourly, and is subject to the overtime laws.

Most caregivers charge an hourly rate according to how much care they are providing for you. The rates are quite affordable, with some home care agencies charging $120 to $200 per 10-to-12-hour night of care. Typically, daily rates are $200 to around $350 a day. You should also be aware that various home care agencies set minimum hours a day for one of their licensed caregivers to be in a clients home.

Live-in care is different than overnight care because a caregiver stays at a patients home for 24 hours at a time, three or four days per week. The Department of Labor defines live-in care as having one caregiver spend at least 120 hours — five straight days — per week at a clients house, explained Harriette Wootton. Across the current 27 European Union (EU) member states, long-term care workers in the nonresidential sector, that is, caring for clients in their homes instead of a residential facility, are paid 80% of national median hourly wages. While the average caregiver earns approximately $46,440 per year in the U.S., a large part of that roughly $46 depends on the hourly rate, hours worked, and the region.

As mentioned, how much you may pay for your home care services will greatly depend on how many hours a caretaker is at your house, and what supplies are needed to keep you comfortable. On a typical basis, you should look at about $4,000 per month if you need full-time care, and far less than about $4 for structured care. Nurses assigned to the third (11 pm-7 am) shift must be paid the shift differential, which is four dollars ($4.00) an hour above their contract rate for an hourly job. Effective January 1, 2005, employees whose regularly assigned shifts begin between 10:200 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. should be paid a one-dollar ($ 1) per hour shift differential.

Night Difference For employees whose weekday schedules include regularly scheduled nights on call, they shall receive a night differential equal to ten percent (10%) of their adjusted rate. A regular-rate employee assigned to one regularly scheduled night shift, who is temporarily assigned to another night shift of higher differential Another night shift with higher differential shall receive a higher differential when a greater portion of an employees regularly scheduled hours without overtime falls during a shift of higher differential. Meals breaks lasting 1 hour or less occurring during a time the differential is authorized on the nights shift must be included to determine a prevailing rate employees right to a differential on nights. A prevailing rate employee working on a regularly scheduled shift that is shorter than 8 hours in length (such as part-time or irregular employees) is entitled to the night shift differential if the majority of an employees hours are worked during a period when the night shift differential is paid.

Under the “8-and-80” system, nursing facilities can pay employees–with whom they have an existing agreement–overtime wages for each hour worked beyond eight hours during the day and 80 hours in a 14-day period. So, the 4-hour overtime (4 hours worked less 40 hours makes 4-hours of overtime), timed at $2.785, is the extra $11.14 of overtime wages that would be due that week.
